Hill School’s first Auction, “A Little Night Bidding,” in 1978 was such a huge success that the event became a tradition. Parents, friends and businesses are asked to donate goods and services which can be auctioned or to work on committees to prepare for the event. Last year virtually every family participated in some way.
Since 2000, the Auction has annually netted over $200,000. The Auction is a critical element of our school’s operating budget, providing funding for faculty professional development, student financial aid, faculty housing, the campus expansion program, educational materials, equipment, community outreach, and other special projects. Special projects have included the buses, smart boards, computer labs and the climbing wall.
“New York, New York,” Hill School’s 40th Anniversary Auction will be held on May 13th, 2017. In January, our Acquisition team will begin meeting. Acquisition requests will be mailed in February. Once items start to come in, you can begin to preview these donations on the Catalog Tab. Pictures of items, as they become available, will be posted here!
The Hill School Auction has three separate bidding opportunities; The Silent Auction, Board Auction and Live Auction. When you register, you will receive a bidding number to use in all three Auctions.
In the Silent Auction, we will be using our own personal cell phones to bid. Upon your arrival, we will provide you with a link to the BidPal website where you will do your bidding. Please remember to bring your cell phone with you to the Auction. The BidPal website provides a description of all the Silent items, bid increments, photo (if available) and donor information plus a Guaranteed “Buy Now” winning bid. All of the items will be on display with description cards and you are encouraged to view them. But with mobile bidding, you can bid from anywhere, at any time until the Silent Auction closes. Mobile bidding is a lot of fun. It will let you know if you are the current successful bidder on an item, and will alert you when you have been out-bid. If you choose to purchase an item at the Guaranteed “Buy Now” price, bidding on that item will be closed. In the Silent Auction, you know exactly what the current bid is, how much you have to bid to be the successful bidder, and what the price is to “win” the bid.
The Board Auction is unique to Hill. Unlike the Silent Auction, the board is based on “blind” bidding. In one corner of the gym you will find multiple large boards, each with slots for 20 items. The first two boards will include Class Gifts and Super Silent items and each Board has a minimum bid of $100. Next you will find the Super Boards with a minimum bid of $250. The Super Super Board has a minimum bid of $500, the Ultimate Board has a minimum bid of $750 and new this year we will have a Platinum Board with a minimum that has yet to be decided. What this means is you must bid at least the minimum for items on these individual boards for your bid to be recognized.
To bid, you must fill out a bid card with your paddle number, the item name, and the amount you want to bid. Bid cards are available on the cocktail tables, in front of the boards, and on the tables displaying the board items. Place your bid in one of the baskets carried by the bid collectors. Every bid is secret and you will only know that you are the successful bidder when your paddle number appears next to the item. But, your number can be replaced and you must re-bid to continue to win the items you want. It sounds complicated, but it is a very fun, competitive game. Once you get the hang of it, you will really enjoy playing. “Bid to Own” is something we like to encourage; if you really want an item, bid high and wait for your number to appear! Be ready for a final bidding rush just before closing time. It can be frantic. Have your bid cards ready with your increasing bid amounts so you can be prepared to keep bidding during that rushed period. Our most successful bidders are prepared and know exactly what they want to bid and when!
The Live Auction takes place right after dinner. The auctioneer will begin the bidding while pictures of the items/trips appear on the large screen. To bid, simply show the auctioneer your bidding number located on your bidding paddle, which you will receive when you register. Make sure to hold it up high enough to be recognized! The Live Auction continues until all the items have been sold. We encourage our guests to be familiar with the Live Items before coming to the Auction. You can plan your strategies, put purchase groups together, and be prepared to win!
Please join us for our Auction. We provide a variety of wonderful items to bid on…there is truly something for everyone! If you have any questions regarding our bidding procedures, please don’t hesitate to contact Chris Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org or simply give the Auction Office a call at (540) 687-5897. We would be happy to provide tutorials, tips and more!

DELIVERY OF DONATED ITEMS to the school may begin immediately. Early deliveries are encouraged and appreciated! All items, or a picture of your item, must be received by March 31st. Items, marked with the donor’s name, may be left at the school office. Questions? Please call the Auction Office at (540) 687-5897. Thank you.
Final placement of donated items will be determined by The Hill School Auction Office. The Hill School Auction Office is solely responsible for all coordination between the donor and the successful bidder regarding purchased auction items. Services, homes, trips, parties, and other similar items are non-transferable and must be used within one year of the Auction unless otherwise specified.
